Residency: Have Company
Location: Grand Rapids, MI
Date: Early Spring, 2016
Memories: The residency required me to host an event which would be open to the public. The challenge lead to the development of the Our Stories in Other Voices workshop, for which I created a 63 page hand-bound workbook of the same name. When I wasn't in the shop cutting down pages and sewing spines, I wandered around; until I eventually found myself in Detroit.
For 13 miles I wandered from Wayne State to Downtown without path or order. If the architecture of a building called and I was allowed to answer, I entered. Some drawings began in the grand hall of the Main Library and continued in a basement tunnel between the Fisher & the Albert Kahn Buildings.
Once returning to Grand Rapids, I hosted “Our Stories, in Other Voices,” a workshop based in the exchange of written self-speak. Participants completed the writing prompts within their journals, anonymously distributed their books and we read the stories of ourselves.
